Submitted by Half-Shire Historical SocietyOn May 17, Half-Shire hosted the annual Heritage hall planning luncheon. Over thirty people attended, and most plans were finalized for the hall. This year the Fair is working with a “Christmas in July” theme, and our building will have a large Christmas tree in one of our sitting rooms.
Many of our guests that day also perused the Library and family file collection. The collection is growing weekly as we exchange information with researchers and other institutions. Our former librarian, Pam Kellogg is planning on updating our family file index in the next few weeks for us. Pam is getting ready to relocate to the Carolina, and has been busy planning and packing.
On Saturday, August 31, The Richland Hamlet community will be holding a community garage sale. Half-Shire is offering neighbors the opportunity of using our hall, or tables on our lawn to participate. Contact Trustee Erma Schroeder at 298-3874 for more information. Some light lunch items will be offered at Half-Shire on that day, along with free coffee.
We were saddened to here of the passing of our several friends and members in the past week. On May 11, the Richland community was stunned to hear of the death of eleven-year-old Morgan Rebetoy, grandchild of member Glenda Derr. Morgan was well known in the hamlet, and beloved by all who knew her. Our thoughts are with the family.
Member Veronica Terrill Heffron Bitz of Syracuse died on May 2nd. She was the widow of World War II veteran Merton Heffron of Redfield. Veronica was very helpful with our Redfield World War II book, and was a summer resident of Sandy Pond.
Ruth Oyer Webb, who died on May 9, at the age of 85, was a correspondent of ours in the past. One item the obituary neglected was her year reign as “Queen of Redfield” several years ago.
Sympathy is also extended to the family of Warren Cronk, whose brother Steve is a frequent visitor at Half-Shire where his ATV association hold meetings periodically. Elaine Doty of Volney and Panther Lake who died on May 12, was a member of the society, and is sister to our member Traver Knight. Elaine’s keen wit will be sincerely missed at out County Fair and other venues that she visited.
Half-Shire is open each Friday from 12-4 or by appointment. We always have hot coffee or tea available for researchers to enjoy as they peruse our files.
We can also be contacted at P.O. 73, Richland, NY 13144 or on the Web at [email protected].
