OSWEGO — Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra will offer Latin dance music influenced by indie rock at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26, in Hewitt Union ballroom at SUNY Oswego.
Based in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, WSO thrives on high-energy salsa dura arrangements of contemporary indie rock tunes — an unlikely meld that is winning notice far beyond the city.
Featured at the Kennedy Center on New Year’s Eve, the 11-piece orchestra’s fall performance dates extend from Connecticut to California.
The WSO performance at SUNY Oswego is a partnership between the Artswego Performing Arts Series and ALANA Student Leadership Conference, in celebration of National Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month.
Led by percussionist/arranger Gianni Mano, the band features Argentinian chanteuse Solange Prat and skilled young instrumentalists whose backgrounds include Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico and cities across the United States.
With a full complement of horns and percussion, they blend the big-band salsa sound with fresh musical ideas and attitude for a new generation.
“Our style of music, while rooted in the salsa tradition, has one foot in the future and in the anything-goes spirit of indie rock,” Mano said. “We’ve created our own style of salsa, which can be enjoyed by everyone.”
He added, “Here in Brooklyn, people of all ages and backgrounds are dancing to our music, and we can’t wait to share it with Central New York.”
The orchestra’s ever-evolving list of high-energy covers includes songs by Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, TV on the Radio, The Black Keys and many more.
At the Oswego performance, audience members are welcome to listen concert-style, or to express themselves on the dance floor with members of La Familia de la Salsa of Syracuse.
For the adventurous, salsa dance instruction will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the Marano Campus Center food and activity court.
Tickets to the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra are $15 ($5 for SUNY Oswego students), available at all SUNY Oswego box offices, online at tickets.oswego.edu or by calling 315-312-2141.
Parking is included in the price of a ticket, and is available in the lot in front of Culkin Hall and the employee and commuter lots behind Hart and Funnelle residence halls.
