The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District inducted Jean Paternoster and David C. Phelps into the APW Athletic Wall of Fame during the annual varsity athletic awards banquet, held this year in early June.
Jean Paternoster was selected for the honor in recognition of her contributions, time and energy to support the growth and development of APW athletes through the Parish Town Gym, Parish Little League, Parish Summer Recreation Program, and APW Sports Boosters Club.
Paternoster was nominated by Clark Stanton, who contributed much of the success of the 1990s APW League Championship Boys’ Basketball Teams to the hours the young players spent during open gymnasium time at the Parish Town Gym with Paternoster.
Paternoster passed away in 2002, accepting the distinction in her honor was her husband Michael and her children Michael Paternoster, Scott Paternoster, Shane Paternoster, Misty (Paternoster) Filkins and their respective families.
The second 2013 Wall of Fame distinction was presented to former APW athlete David C. Phelps.
Phelps graduated from APW in 1965 and was nominated for the honor by his nephew, Jim Poindexter, in recognition of his achievements both on and off the basketball court. A player and a person that always showed care and concern for his teammates, classmates and friends, Phelps led the 1965 APW Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team to a County Championship. Following high school Phelps enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he continued to be a symbol of what it means to put others first. Phelps served in Vietnam and in 1967, at 21 years of age, gave his life tending to a wounded Marine.
The memory of David C. Phelps continues today in the APW boys’ varsity basketball program with an annual award in his namesake that recognizes a player for showing the most improvement and being the best team contributor.
Accepting the Wall of Fame distinction in honor of David C. Phelps was his brother, Tom Phelps and his nephew, Jim Poindexter.
The Wall of Fame appreciation program is in its inaugural year at APW and was established to strengthen and add distinction to the current athletic program in the district as well as honor individuals who have distinguished themselves as leaders and role models in APW athletics.
A task force committee comprised of current athletes, parents, community members, coaches, board members as well as current and retired school district personnel oversee the APW Athletic Wall of Fame.
The Wall of Fame exhibit featuring the 2013 inductees is located at the APW Junior/Senior High School.
