OSWEGO, NY – Just one week after collecting his first career Oswego Speedway victory, Dalton Doyle got to do it all over again.
The final 20-laps of the June 1 Pathfinder Bank SBS main were to be completed on Saturday, with Doyle inheriting the lead after front runners Josh Kerr and Anthony Losurdo crashed before the rains came two weeks ago.
Doyle led a single file restart at lap 10, immediately pulling out to a healthy race lead, cruising on to his second career victory over Mike Bruce, JJ Andrews, Mike Bond, and rookie Jeremy Pitcher.
“Man, I hate leading,” said Doyle. “You never know what’s going on behind you; you never know where anybody is, or how you’re doing. This is cool though, I just tried to stay as calm as possible and just focus on hitting my marks every lap. The car got pretty loose so it was a little bit of a handful from the center off, but it was good enough to hold onto.”
Kreig Heroth, Jon Teosriero, Jason Simmons, AJ Bernys, and Russ Brown completed the top ten order in the Best Western PLUS/Quality Inn and Suites make-up main event.
Doyle led Pitcher, Bruce, Andrews, Heroth, Simmons, Andrew Schartner, Tesoriero, Bond, and Bernys to the stripe to restart the make-up feature on Saturday night, with Doyle quickly building a nice gap in front.
Simmons, who managed to work his way into a championship battle with Brown and Bond heading into Saturday, tried to work high just a couple laps in but found himself freight strained dropping back to ninth in the order allowing Schartner, Tesoriero, and Bond to slip by.
Caution would wave at lap 13 for one of the title contenders in Brown after making contact with the Jack Patrick No. 9, forcing Patrick to spin across the front straight. Each car would have to restart at the tail of the field.
After a few short laps of green the day’s second caution would wave at lap 16, this time for Cameron Rowe and Tim Gareau on the back stretch. For the second week in a row Rowe’s No. 77 would have to leave the Speedway on the hook, while Gareau pulled away.
Just after the caution waved for this incident, Bruce and Pitcher would collide in the third turn with Pitcher once again touching the outside foam. This incident was far less severe than one week ago, with Pitcher pulling away and retaining his running position as the caution had already flown for Rowe and Gareau.
With that said the restart order showed Doyle ahead of Pitcher, Bruce, Andrews, Heroth, Tesoriero, Simmons, Bernys, Bruce, and Schartner.
Just one lap after the green waved, Pitcher slid high showing Bruce and Andrews the low side to move to second and third in the order. The No. 22 and No. 93 would now give chase to race leader Doyle, beginning to draw him in.
Each would do so at lap 21 when yet another caution hit the Speedway.
Rookie Scott Shafer made heavy contact with the outside turn one wall in the No. 76, dropping him out of the day feature.
With only 9-laps remaining the front spots stay locked in with Bond making some final moves to try and gain valuable championship points on Brown. By lap 25 Bond worked his way from sixth up to fourth driving by Heroth and Pitcher on his way to the front. However, Bond would run out of laps on his march to the lead leaving Bruce, and Andrews to chase Doyle across the line for win number two of 2013.
Driving for Teddneck Racing and building his own engines, Bruce has enjoyed a successful start to the current campaign.
“Doyle has always been a consistent driver, he ran a great line,” said Bruce. “I was going to give him the old bump and run because he picks on me all the time for it, but I was never close enough to him to do it. He works his butt off for it, so congratulations to Doyle and his parents and everyone who works with them.”
Andrews brought the No. 93 home with another podium finish early on Saturday night.
“It was good,” said Andrews. “I had a faster car than Mikey (Bruce), but he held a good line. I felt like I had something for him and maybe Dalton because the car was that good, but you can’t race with somebody if you can’t get by the guy in front of you. We were happier with third last week, but anytime I get to talk to you guys its good.”
