FULTON, NY – Clients in the Step By Step Wellness program have been discovering their creativity as they participate in the program’s new sewing group.  Established by staff generalist Virginia Lockhart, the sewing group has been busy on a number of projects including; tote bags for Catholic Charities’ food pantry as well as decorative pillows for the group members.

Lockhart, who is an accomplished seamstress, is pleased that the sewing group has been so well received.

“Our clients are enjoying the sewing group and find it to be very rewarding,” said Lockhart. “I understand the benefits of having our clients involved in programs that enrich their lives and help them better express themselves. To be able to create clothing and crafts from hand is a very satisfying experience that benefits our clients in many ways.”

The reusable tote bags that the group has made were a welcome addition to the food pantry.

The bags are available free of charge to families and individuals who access the pantry.

With the response she has received from members of the sewing group, Lockhart is looking forward to expanding the group and introducing more challenging projects such as art quilts and clothing.

“It’s been interesting to see how dedicated our members are to the sewing group.  Whether it’s someone who just learned how to thread a needle for the first time or someone who has previous sewing experience, the sewing group has provided them with an opportunity for creative expression and an avenue for independence,” said Lockhart.

Administered by Catholic Charities of Oswego County, the Step By Step Wellness program uses a wellness recovery model that provides an array of services to adults diagnosed with a mental illness and assists them in their recovery.

The sewing group, which meets Wednesdays at 11 a.m., as well as other workshops and other programs, are open to all clients.
