WEST MONROE, NY – The state’s largest tire dump is no longer in Oswego County.

The state announced today that cleanup of the tire dump in West Monroe is nearly finished.

Earlier today (Nov. 19), state, county and local officials gathered at the Fortino Tire Yard to announce that clean up of the site is nearly 100 percent complete.

For years, the Pinnacle Road Spur site had been considered home of the state’s largest tire dump.

According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, there were 11.4 million waste tires removed from the 50-acre dump.

“We are very pleased that it has been cleaned up,” said Barry Leemann, chair of the Oswego County Legislature. “This is definitely a big step forward in making Oswego County a better place.”

Saratoga County now has the dubious honor of having the state’s largest waste tire dump (a site with ‘just’ five million tires), Leemann said.

It took five years to complete the project, Leemann told Oswego County Today, adding it is a day that he thought might never come.

The DEC began removing tires from the site in 2006, after a year of planning, Leemann explained.

Things should be completed by early next year, he added.

There are an estimated 34 million waste tires statewide, according to a DEC press release.

The state has made “significant progress” in cleaning up many of these sites, it continued.

It cost approximately $27 million to clean the site. Funding was provided through the Waste Tire Management and Recycling Act.

The vast majority of the tires removed from the Fortino site will be recycled and used for the base of landfills as well as for road construction, Leemann said.
