Men’s Ice Hockey Holds Off Geneseo For 4-2 Victory

Dec 06, 2009 at 11:05 am

Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.) scored the eventual game-winning goal at 11:35 in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie as the Oswego State men’s ice hockey team held off Geneseo 4-2 on Saturday night at the Campus Center Arena. The Lakers out-shot the Blue Knights 37-17, but Geneseo received a solid performance from netminder Adrian Rubeniuk, who made 33 saves and allowed one goal. Oswego State goalie Kyle Gunn-Taylor (Sr., West Seneca, N.Y.) picked up the win behind 15 saves. The Lakers improved to 10-1-0 overall and 8-0-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Knights dropped to 4-7-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the league.

Oswego State forward Luke Moodie (Fr., Burlington, Ont.) broke a scoreless tie at 5:04 in the second period with a power play goal with assists going to Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) and Hank Van Boxmeer (So., Orange, Calif.). Geneseo came back with a power play goal of its own off the stick of Dan Brown less than two minutes later.

The Blue Knights took a 2-1 lead at 13:28 in the stanza when Phil Rose posted his third goal of the season. However, the edge did not last long as Musselwhite tallied the second power play goal of the game for the Lakers 45 seconds later. Brad Dormiedy (Sr., Ajax, Ont.) picked up the assist as the teams headed into the final frame deadlocked at 2-2.

It was midway through the third period that Selleck netted the game-winning goal after receiving a pass from Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y.) and Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.). Geneseo pulled Rubeniuk with 35 seconds remaining, but Selleck found Laganiere for the insurance goal at 19:47 for the 4-2 victory.

Oswego State’s Kyle Gunn-Taylor remained undefeated on the season at 7-0-0 as he made 15 saves. Rubeniuk finished the contest with 33 saves in the losing effort.

The Lakers have a busy week ahead as they travel to Utica on Tuesday and Hamilton on Friday before hosting Hobart on Saturday at the Campus Center Arena.
