Oswego State Women’s Basketball Defeats Cazenovia 66-55

Dec 20, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Sophomore Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) exploded for 33 points to help the Oswego State women’s basketball team close out the first half of the season with a 66-55 victory at Cazenovia on Friday night. The Lakers held a 22-point halftime advantage, but had to hold off a late Wildcat charge for the win. Oswego State improved to 3-5 overall, while Cazenovia dropped to 1-5.

With a slim 9-8 lead, the Laker offense warmed up to finish the stanza shooting 45.7 percent as it outscored the Wildcats 31-12 for a 42-20 halftime lead. Cazenovia was limited to 8-for-33 shooting, including 0-for-9 from behind the three-point arc, during the half.

The Wildcats received six points from Colleen Clarke and four points from Samantha Allen midway through the second half to make the score 53-43 with 9:22 remaining. Cazenovia pulled to within four points at 58-54 after a three-pointer by Clarke with 1:37 left to play. However, Kayla Ryan and Kristen Diglio (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) combined to go 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute to seal the victory for Oswego State.

Ryan finished the night shooting 14-of-19 from the floor, as she also added 12 rebounds for the double-double. Rachel Kohrs (Sr., New Lebanon, N.Y.) was the only other Laker to reach double-digits with 12 points on four three-point shots. Colleen Clarke’s 24 points and Samantha Allen’s 11 points paced the Wildcats, who shot 29.2 percent (21-of-72) from the field. Both squads struggled to control possession as Oswego State committed 31 turnovers and Cazenovia committed 26.

The Lakers return to the court Tuesday, Jan. 5 when they travel to Canton, N.Y. to face St. Lawrence at 6 p.m.
