OSWEGO — Nature hikes, storytelling sessions, and birdwatching opportunities are among the winter activities scheduled at SUNY Oswego’s Rice Creek Field Station.

Children can learn about animals, their wild ways and how they relate to humans during six “Nature’s Story Hour” programs on Saturdays. These free storytelling sessions will begin at 1 p.m. Jan. 16 and 30, Feb. 13 and 27 and March 13 and 27. The tales are tailored to elementary school children, but all are welcome. Adults must accompany kids under 7 years old.

A series of naturalist-led Rice Creek Rambles — walks introducing participants to the wintertime sights and sounds of the station — will start at 11 a.m. on six Saturdays: Jan. 9 and 23, Feb. 6 and 20, and March 6 and 20. Attendees are asked to call on the morning of the hike to check trail conditions. A limited number of snowshoes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission is free. An adult must accompany children.

Nature’s Story Hour and Rice Creek Rambles are funded by the Natural Heritage Trust.

The public is invited to catch up with feathered friends at Rice Creek on most Fridays and Saturdays. The station seeks “citizen-scientists” who can help count the birds at the Rice Creek feeders from the indoor viewing area to help the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology’s annual survey of winter birds. Those interested can also participate in Project FeederWatch from their own feeders

Rice Creek Field Station includes the 26-acre Rice Pond surrounded by 400 acres of land ranging from open fields to forests. The research building is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Trails are open every day from dawn to dusk.

The field station accommodates the general public and serves as a center for college courses and research. It is located on Thompson Road a quarter-mile south of Route 104 and the main SUNY Oswego campus. For information, visit www.oswego.edu/ricecreek.

The Oswego High School Class of  2011 is prepared to begin its march toward June 25 graduation exercises at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center. However, the members of the Class of 2010 have made their mark and are moving to their next life step.

Oswego Middle School Principal Bonnie Finnerty has proudly announced the final honor roll for the 2009-2010 school year.

Nathaniel V. Ellis graduated from the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Candidate School at Fort Rucker, Daleville, Ala., and was appointed to the rank of warrant officer one.

The Curse of the Silverback, the Enchanted Forest/Water Safari’s newest water ride, which debuted in 2009, is expected to continue to draw visitors with its unique purple and black appeal and daring silverback theme.  Riders experience a 100 foot drop into a large 40-ft diameter bowl where they circle the bowl dropping out the middle into the splash pool below.
