Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short At Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team (1-2) scored three goals in the final five minutes, but saw its second-half rally come up short in a 12-10 loss to Utica (3-2), 12-10, Wednesday evening. Erin Cummings (Sr., Valley Cottage, N.Y.) paced the Lakers with four goals and an assist, while the Pioneers were led by Katlyn Banker’s five goals and two assists.

Utica held a 2-0 lead after the opening ten minutes of the first half following goals by Banker and Samantha Gebler, but Oswego State countered with markers from Rachael Raffa (Sr., Kings Park, N.Y.) and Corinne Marsh (So., Endwell, N.Y.) to even the score. Banker and Raffa traded goals later in the frame before the Pioneers tallied three straight to go up, 6-3, with 4:33 left in the stanza.

Stephanie Cronk (Jr., Endwell, N.Y.) received a pass from Courtney Cosentino (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) to pull the Lakers to within one, but Megan Kane closed out the half for Utica with her fourth goal of the season, giving the Pioneers a 7-4 halftime lead.

Both squads traded goals for the majority of the second half with the three Oswego State goals coming from the sticks of Marsh and Cummings to maintain the three-goal margin. Utica’s Morgan Dupont scored twice in under a minute with five minutes to play to put the Pioneers in command at 12-7.

The Lakers were not done fighting, though, as Cummings registered a pair of goals in the next minute followed by a free position goal by Kasey Kuzma (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) to make the score, 12-10. However, Oswego State was unable to get another shot off before the end of the game.

Ashlee Engel (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) suffered the loss in the cage after making nine saves, while Shelby Barbay posted five saves for Utica. Liz Conrad (Sr., Jackson, N.J.) finished the game with six ground balls.
