OSWEGO – Lacrosse sectionals are ready to kick off with both Buc varsity teams hosting opponents.
On May 22 the third seeded Lady Bucs will host sixth seed Carthage at Joe Wilber Field at 5 p.m. and the following evening, May 23, the fourth seeded Buc boys’ will host number five East Syracuse-Minoa at 7 p.m.
In other action softball is set for post season play while the track and field competitors look forward to championship meets and the golf team closed out the year in .500 fashion. Meanwhile, the baseball team proved competitive as the season wound down.
Softball Preps for Sectionals
The Oswego High School Buc softball team could be among the top four seeds when the committee meets after the 8-6 win over West Genesee on Thursday.
The matchup with the Wildcats was a showdown for a potentially higher seed in post season play.
It was also a special day for another reason as Coach Mike McCrobie is winding down his career as the veteran coach has 392 wins, three section crowns, five league titles and has been coach of the year a half dozen times as well as the New York State Coach of the Year in 1995. The contributions have been so outstanding that in ceremonies after the game Athletic Director Scott Sugar announced that the name of the diamond as the Michael J. McCrobie Field.
The Lady Bucs clinched the game with a two run sixth as multiple run frames were the story of the day. Oswego scored three in the first for a quick 3-0 lead, but the visitors chipped back run by run to tie it at 3-3 in the top of the sixth.
The Bucs bounced right back with three in the bottom of the frame for a 6-3 advantage.
In the big inning which clinched the game Cortnie Purce was walked and scored on a double by Allie Yule.
Mary Montagnola pushed the runner ahead and winning hurler Emily Kolenda was issued a free pass. Pinch runner Lindsey Ramsey stole base and then with two outs Ashlee Wapen hit a pop to short which was dropped for a two-run error.
Kolenda scattered 10 hits as the Bucs won their 11th of the year.
In pre game ceremonies seniors Montagnola, Kolenda, Yule and Wapen were recognized for their contributions to the Lady Bucs softball program.
Earlier in the week the Bucs lost 6-3 to Liverpool.
Track & Field Prep for Big Meets
The Oswego varsity track team, turned in an outstanding performance against the visiting Bees of Baldwinsville Wednesday, to close out a successful 2012 season.
“Despite the cold and windy conditions, the team did a terrific job, earning many personal bests in the competition” said Coach Jim McCaul ” Our team has really come a long way in terms of improvement and has built the foundation for future success.”
Leading the Lady Bucs was senior triple winner Whitney Ford, who won the triple jump (31′ 2″), the 200 meter dash (27.7) and the 100 meter dash, with a season best time of 12.8. Tara Stacy also placed first for Oswego in the 800 meter dash (2:44.90).
Sophomore Cassie Hondro, shattered her previous bests in the high jump (4′ 8″) and discus (73′ 5″), to place second in both for the Lady Bucs, in addition to finishing second in the shot put. Oswego’s 4 x 400 meter relay of Adele Castelain, Rhona Dianang, Chyloe Patterson, and Stacy, lowered their previous season best by nine seconds, to also finish second. Other seconds were earned by Kaylee Baldwin in the 400 meter hurdles, Dianang in the 400 meter dash, Ariel Bouffard in the 800 meter run, and Katrina Tafler in the long and triple jumps.
Junior Bethany Mason threw a best of 72′ 10″ in the discus, to place third. Other thirds included Cheyenne Sanchez in the 400 meter hurdles, Castelain in the 400 meter dash, Baldwin in the 100 meter hurdles, Chyloe Patterson in the 800 meter run, and Ashley Sgro in the high jump, with a best of 4′ 6″.
Other personal bests for the Lady Bucs were earned by Rana Al-Salameh and Grace Gilbert in the 200 meter dash, Bouffard, Patterson, and Stacy in the 400 meter dash, and Marsaili Knapp in the pole vault.
The Oswego boy’s were led by senior standout Mike Ruggio, who was a double winner, placing first in the shot put (42′ 1″) and discus, with a season best toss of 117′ 2″. Oswego placed second in the 4 x 800 meter relay, behind the strong efforts of Pat Dillon, Peter Khamis. David Johnson and Mitch Rabalais (9:23.8), with Johnson, Xander Lara, Khamis, and Matt Winn, earning first in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:51.7). Other firsts were turned in by Cory Keefe in the 100 meter dash (11.0), Ben Harrington in the 400 meter hurdles (1:04.9) and high jump (5′ 6″), and Devlin Babcock in the triple jump (34′ 6 3/4″).
Placing second for Oswego were Mitch Rabalais in the 3200 meter run (11:38/1), Keefe in the long jump (19′ 1/2″), and Lara in the pole vault (9′), with Jake Annal finishing third in the 400 meter hurdles.
Junior Cody earned a personal best in the discus, shattering his previous best by 23 feet, with senior Billy Crist lowering his career best in the 100 meter dash.
Other bests for the rapidly improving Bucs, were earned by Johnson and Khamis in the 800 meter run, Matt DiFabio in the 1600 meter run, Tom Godfrey in the 110 meter hurdles, Khamis in the 400 meter dash, Tyler Benjamin in the shot put, Mike Sheffield in the shot put and discus, Alex Johnson in the discus, and Babcock in the discus, with a fine toss of 107′.
Oswego will begin their championship season next week, with the Girl’s Sectional Class meet to be held on Tuesday and the boy’s on Wednesday, both at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, site of this year’s New York State Track and Field Championships.
Gosek Finishes Career in Style
After four years of golf at Oswego High, senior captain Sarah Gosek completed her career in style on Thursday, firing a match-low score of 46, leading the Bucs to their sixth win of the season and pulling the Bucs to a respectable .500 on the year.
The win came in perfect playing conditions on Liverpool Country Club’s par 36 front nine.
Oswego’s final stroke count of 211 bested Liverpool by 43 strokes and was a convincing close-out to an overall successful season for the Bucs. It was also a nice end to the high school golfing careers of three other Lady Buc Golfers. Gosek’s teammates Michaela Kearns, Caroline Reynolds and Abby Atkins will join her as they turn their attention to higher education and all the exciting challenges that come along with the transition.
Coach Rose reflected after the team’s final match of 2012. “Golf, like many other sports, teaches enduring life lessons. The lessons taught on the links will of course be immediately applicable to the world associated with higher academia, but more importantly, the lessons will reach far beyond that. A golfer’s honesty, integrity, perseverance and resolve are all tested every time they tee off. These are the grand lessons which will linger with these high school golfers long after their senior year of high school.”
For a few Oswego golfers, however, there is still some season left in which to learn.
Buc golfers Emilee Anderson and Courtney Kelly will tee it up with Gosek at Foxfire Golf Club in Baldwinsville on Tuesday in the sectional golf tournament. All of the section’s top golfers will be in attendance, competing for individual and team honors.
“It’s the only 18-hole competition of the season for these girls,” commented Coach Rose. “It will test the players’ mental and physical stamina, and the course will be set up to test all parts of their game.”
The Bucs finished the 2012 season with 6 wins and 6 losses. Congratulations to the rest of the Oswego High School Golf Team members: Liz Baker, Madi Collins, Lauren Daniels, Samantha Davis, Tess Gordon, Emily Hurlbutt, Meghan LiVoti, Caroline Reynolds, Kara Weiss, Tory Welsch, and Chrissy Abare.
Varsity Nine Edged
The Oswego Bucs varsity baseball lost a 4-3 decision to Rome Free Academy on Thursday.
Oswego took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first , but gave up two in the bottom of the second, another in the fifth and the winning tally in the last of the seventh as Rome earned it tenth win of the year.
For the Bucs Autie Ascenzi doubled and drove in three runs.
On the mound was Tom Dillon as he picked up the loss for the 6-10 overall and 4-7 in league play Bucs.
Mod Softball Action
The modified softball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 16-8 win over visiting Mexico.
Hannah Gorman was the winning pitcher.
Emily Lloyd and Gorman both singled twice, while Allie Rodgers, Maia Delaney, Hannah Brown, and Sydnie LeRoy all had hits.
