Oswego BOCES offers many Adult Education opportunities for area residents that many people may not know about.
To help community members learn about all of the opportunities currently available for adults through BOCES, Oswego Public Library’s Public Computing Center is offering an information session on July 17 at 7 p.m. in the library’s Community Room.
Making the presentation will be Rob Elia, BOCES Workforce Liaison and Paul Gugel BOCES Director of Adult & Migrant Education. They will give details about literacy and career training opportunities for adults, and help people explore possible career paths.
There are many training programs available in the health care field, including practical nursing, medical assistant, certified nurse aide, dental assistant, phlebotomist, administrative health assistant and medical billing & coding specialist.
Training opportunities are also available in the following careers: automotive services & technology, welding, heavy equipment operation, tractor trailer driving and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning).
In addition to the career training courses, literacy programs such as Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education (Preparation for the GED Exam) and English for Speakers of Other languages are also available.
Literacy Programs are provided at no cost to participants and help them prepare for more specific career training.
Elia and Gugel will also explain the application and admissions process, entrance testing (TABE), remediation available, and possible funding options for career training.
Following the presentation, they will be available to speak with people on an individual basis to answer their questions and assist them with the application process.

The Public Computing Center, located on the lower level of Oswego Public Library, is open daily with someone to help members of the public with anything computer or technology related.
Help with preparing resumes, cover letters, and job applications is also offered. A Job Club meets on Mondays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Oswego Public Library’s Public Computing Center offers free workshops on Saturdays, weekdays, and weekday evenings. Saturday workshops offered in July include a series of 3 workshops on Internet Safety for Parents: How to Keep Your Children Safe on the Internet on July 14, 21, and 28 from 10 a.m. to noon.
On July 21, a workshop on Sketchup, a 3D communication software program, takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. On July 28 from 1 to 3 p.m., there is a workshop on Pinterest, a content sharing and social networking site that allows people to create online pinboards of their favorite things.

Programs are provided free of charge through a Broadband Technology Opportunity grant.
