“We kind of had our January thaw on the 1st and a little into the 2nd,” said to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. “One the 1st, there was only a trace of snow on the ground and it was rainy.” Over all, the average temperature was just about normal. Precipitation was 0.45-inch below normal, but snowfall was nearly 3 feet above average.
The temperature last month was 2.6 degrees below normal and the precipitation was 1.12 inches higher than average. Snowfall, for the first time all winter, was higher than normal – but, we’re still nearly 6 inches below average for the winter.
In late November, Oswego County Clerk George Williams announced that he was stepping down as the Oswego County Republican Committee chairman. He had held the position since April 2003. His last day was Dec. 2. In December, the city and Oswego Town struck a new ambulance agreement.
At the end of September, The Port City and the operator of the Varick Hydroelectric Station launched an investigation into the water release that preceded four fishermen being swept down the Oswego River. Two of the men died. Safety measures are being considered as a result of the meetings.
East Bridge Street, near the vacant St. Louis Church was closed to traffic for hours following the collapse of the building’s north wall late on July 25 – just across from Harborfest’s venue in East Park. In August, hundreds of law enforcement officers, active and retired were joined Aug. 5 in paying their respects for Capt. James Comerford.
As May started, officials at Fort Ontario announced it was closed for the season, and maybe for ever due to the state budget crisis. However, at the end of the month, the state came through with the needed funds to keep the fort open. In June the Port City’s fire chief retired and the First Assistant Fire Chief was named to replace hime
The county’s Child Protection Advisory Council began taking shape in early March. Police also investigated the death of an eastside woman. A sixth grader at Leighton Elementary School is trying to make the city a better place. And, Harborfest is a hot topic again.
There were plenty of people and stories that made news this year. Here is just a few samples as 2010 got under way.
November 2010 goes into the record books a bit warmer and quite a bit drier than average. The average temperature was 41.4 degrees. That is just 0.8-degree higher than average. Precipitation for the month wound up at 2.62 inches. That is 1.85 inches below normal.
