Fulton Rotarians Spend Time with Watch Collector

May 16, 2011 Contributor

Rotarian Don Ross, right, introduced Ronald Kaplewicz, left, at a recent Fulton Rotary Club meeting. Ron is a collector of antique pocket watches. The pocket watch was the men's "watch of choice" from the 1700s until about a generation ago. The pocket watch was manufactured in this country from the middle 1800s through 1969, when the last pocket watch was made by the Hamilton Watch Company. Pocket watch makers assembled their watches in an assembly line manner long before the first car was built. Pocket watches were most often named after the cities in which they were manufactured in. Names like Waltham, Elgin, and Rockford were the names of the common dollar watch. Ron's advice to the Rotarians was not to sell an old watch for the gold in it, but keep it for sentimental reasons. The Rotarians enjoyed Ron's presentation very much. The pocket watch was the men’s “watch of choice” from the 1700s until about a generation ago.
