Rotarians Enjoy Talk About Sterling Nature Center

May 27, 2011 Contributor

Rotarian Charrise St. Onge, right, introduced Jim D’Angelo at a recent Fulton Rotary Club meeting. Jim is the head Naturalist at the Sterling Nature Center. The Nature Center employs two part-time naturalist. The Nature Center is owned and operated by Cayuga County. The Sterling Nature Center came about as a result of the aborted effort by Rochester Gas & Electric to build a nuclear plant there years ago. Cayuga County purchased the 2,800 acres of land that R. G. & E. owned. They sold 1,400 acres to private owners and maintain the other 1400 acres, with 2 miles of Lake Ontario shoreline, as a nature center. As nature centers go, this one is very complete, with ponds, streams, trails, wildflower gardens, interpretive center, bird rookeries, gift shop, year around education programs, hunting, and fishing areas. Jim’s photos of the Sterling Nature Center were very beautiful and instructive. Sterling Nature Center is open to the public year around. The Sterling Nature Center came about as a result of the aborted effort by Rochester Gas & Electric to build a nuclear plant there years ago.
