With its rigorous selection criteria, for 150 years, the Medal of Honor has been known by all as our Nation’s highest military decoration.  What many people don’t know, is that of the fewer than 3,500 recipients, one in four are New Yorkers. With at least 45 Medal of Honor recipients associated with Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties, our region is truly the “home of heroes.”

History Comes Alive At Fort Ontario

Sitting on the mouth of the Oswego River on Oswego’s east side Fort Ontario sees visitors and activities all summer long. The peak of the fort’s summer happenings was this past Harborfest Weekend. The fort went back in time for the weekend with men and women volunteers dressed in their blue Union Army uniforms and old fashion white blouses, respectively. Even former President Abraham Lincoln made an appearance.

Paper Buses to Support School Supply Drive

Carol Shannon (left), administrative assistant for branch administration at Pathfinder Bank, purchases a paper bus from executive director of the United Way, Melanie Trexler. Pathfinder Bank is supporting the annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign by selling paper buses at all of its Oswego County locations to raise money to purchase school supplies so that children in Oswego County will have the supplies they need to begin school.In an effort to support the United Way Stuff-A-Bus campaign, area businesses will be selling paper buses to help raise money to purchase school supplies for students in Oswego County who are in need for the upcoming school year. Working in collaboration with school districts throughout Oswego County, United Way is looking to Stuff-A-Bus with school supplies.

Canal Schooner to visit Oswego Aug. 17

Lee White Museum and Maritime Center will host a celebration of Oswego’s waterfront on Aug. 17. The whole family can enjoy a day at the beautiful waterfront where Lake Ontario meets the Oswego River Canal. Festival activities and historic presentations run from 10 a.m. to 5 pm. in Oswego’s Historic Maritime District on the West First Street Pier.

Quarterly siren tests Planned Aug. 5 – 9

The Oswego County Emergency Management Office has announced that the system of emergency notification sirens surrounding the three nuclear power plants at Nine Mile Point are scheduled to be tested Aug. 5, through 9, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The test is a portion of the regular testing program of the Oswego County emergency alert system.
