It had been several years since I had visited the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. I felt that it was a place to take youngsters. And, yes, it was a beautiful day and there were many adults with children who were thrilled and amazed by the animals. But, there were many adults especially those interested in photography.
I enjoyed the visit because it brought to mind some of my travels.
UPDATE 5:30 PM: Senator Charles Schumer has just informed the mayor’s office that the Port of Oswego Authority has been awarded a $1.5 million grant that will fund the construction of a significant new rail link at the Port. Senator Schumer was committed to working with the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Anthony Foxx, to position the Oswego project for a TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant.
Jennie A. Arduini, 85, of Fulton, died on Thursday August 29, 2013, at St. Luke Health Services, Oswego.
For decades area youth have made a trip to the CYO program a daily ritual. On September 9, 10 and 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. each day, Catholic Charities of Oswego County invites community members to discover for themselves the many reasons why CYO is the place to go after school as it hosts an open house at the CYO facilities inside Catholic Charities at 365 W. First St.
Melanie Trexler, executive director, United Way of Greater Oswego County has announced that Rob Rolfe of Harmony Financial Services will serve as chairperson for the United Way’s Campaign Cabinet. A long time supporter of United Way, Rolfe has served United Way in a number of capacities including 13 years as an employee campaign coordinator, a member of the community investment committee for nine years and a member of the Campaign Cabinet for the past five years.
Ken McCann of Mystic Music DJ Service, presented Karen Perwitz, member of the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County board of directors, with a gift certificate for a four-hour Mystic Music DJ Show. The Mystic Music Show will be available as part of the drawings during the post Blue Ribbon Ride celebration at Lighthouse Lanes on Shampine Drive in Oswego.
Empower Federal Credit Union is a “Triple Word” $1,000 sponsor for the seventh annual Diane Falise Memorial Scrabble Fest. This annual benefit for Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County takes place on Sept. 20, from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Oswego Elks Lodge. “Scrabble Fest helps raise awareness of LVOC and our efforts to combat the issue of illiteracy in Oswego County,” said Meg Henderson, LVOC coordinator.
Talent runs in the Nelson Metz family as is evident in the Oswego Players’ next production, “Don’t Drink the Water,” by noted funnyman, Woody Allen. The production is directed by Nelson’s recent bride, Sherri Lynn Metz, who also takes on the role of his on-stage wife in this fast-paced romp.Added to the mix is Nelson’s son, Chris Metz.
The city of Oswego Fire Department is offering EMT Original and Refresher courses that will begin on October 8. They will be conducted concurrently with sessions held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, testing out in March of 2014. Tuition for the EMT Original is $775, the Refresher is $335.
The Oswego High School golf team knew wins would be tough to come by in the early part of the 2013 season. Starting with five away matches in eight days, the team was literally thrown into league competition, on courses with which they were unfamiliar. Though they played well, Oswego lost its first two matches by a combined 15 shots. That all changed on Thursday at Liverpool.
