The SUNY Oswego GENIUS Olympiad finals open Monday, June 17, welcoming more than 400 competitors and their mentors from around the world, including Kayla Vidal and Bilgenur Sirin of the Syracuse Academy of Science. “We are very excited for the Oswego competition,” said the charter school juniors, who studied the effects on Lake Ontario water quality of fireworks shows at events such as Harborfest.
For more than 30 years, police officers throughout Oswego County have participated in the annual “Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.” On Monday, officers representing the cities of Fulton and Oswego, the county, state police and Oswego State University carried on the tradition. The LETR for Special Olympics is the movement’s largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics in the world.

Residents of the villages of Sandy Creek and Lacona are being advised by the Oswego County Health Department to continue to boil all water used for drinking and cooking due to a water main break in the municipal water system last week. At about 10 a.m. on June 11, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a personal injury accident that occurred at 19 Waterview Road in the Town of Oswego. When deputies arrived, they found that 44-year-old John David Halstead of Fulton had been in the process of dismantling a mobile home when the roof of the home suddenly fell on him.
The Cayuga Community College Foundation and the Auburn/Cayuga Community College Alumni Association recently presented 24 area high school seniors with scholarships to help cover the cost of tuition and expenses when they begin their studies at Cayuga this fall.
