Fred Betts, curator of the Salmon River International Sport Fishing Museum, will give a special presentation on the history of fishing creels Feb. 16. He will display his personal collection of creels during the program. Visitors are invited to bring their own creels for show and tell, and to share information.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a division of SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations, has opened a tax aide site at Central Square Library. It will replace the former site, hosted by St. Bernadette’s in Constantia. The new site will be staffed by RSVP volunteers John Lyons and Marie Crouse.
The Fitzhugh Park Elementary School Student Council held a Super Bowl Friday to assist the Oswego County Humane Society. Students, teachers and staff wore the colors of their favorite National Football League team. More than $100 and a substantial amount of food were donated to the local organization.
The Oswego Public Library’s Library Learning Center will offer a Tax Prep Resources workshop on February 28. This class is free and runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Topics covered by the instructor include: online resources, navigating the Internal Revenue Service webpage and tax tips.
Bridget Swartz, library director of the Parish Public Library announces the library will feature the photography of Krista Alsworth. Krista is a self-taught photographer and specializes in outdoor-wildlife photography. The dates for this show are February/March.
Tyler Hunt of Oswego was named to the Fall 2013 Dean’s List at Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass. To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must achieve a 3.25 gpa.
January 2014’s temperature was down. But, even though the snowfall was above average, the total precipitation was below average overall. The average temperature last month was 2.8 degrees below normal. Total snowfall was 2.8 inches above average, but it was very dry. So the overall precipitation was 1.03 inches below average.
The Oswego State women’s basketball took a 63-51 loss to Oneonta at home on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 6-14 overall and 2-11 in conference play while the Red Dragons improve to 15-5, 9-4.
The Oswego State men’s basketball team avenged an earlier season loss with a 71-61 victory over visiting Oneonta in a crucial SUNYAC matchup in Max Ziel Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Oswego and Oneonta entered the night in a four-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings.
In November 2013, the Oswego Sub Shop was contacted by the United States Secret Service and identified as a possible common point of purchase of a credit card breach (hack). It is also important to understand that this is NOT an “internal investigation,” as it has been speculated in social media outlets, BUT RATHER a much larger investigation and scope.
