State Police in Pulaski announce the arrest of Joseph M. Smegelsky Jr., 34, from Oswego, for Grand Larceny 3rd degree, a class “D” felony. An audit and investigation by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli’s office of the Minetto Fire Department reportedly uncovered the alleged misappropriation of nearly $20,000 in department funds by Smegelsky Jr., the department chief.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Oswego County for today, and high heat and humidity is predicted for Wednesday also. The Oswego County Health Department recommends that everyone understand the warning signs of heat-related illness and take special care of those at risk. Each year more people in the United States die from extreme heat exposure than from hurricanes, lightening, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. On average, about 300 people die each year from exposure to heat.
In a brief reorganizational meeting Tuesday morning, the Oswego school board appointed a new slate of officers for the 2014-2015 school year. Kathleen Allen, the board’s president for the 2013-2014 academic year, was re-appointed president for the coming school year. Lynda Sereno was named VP. Dr. Dean Goewey was approved as the district’s new assistant superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, replacing the retired Cathy Chamberlain.
