Councilor Eric VanBuren feels changes to the code are needed to help the city better get a handle on the problem of tall grass around Oswego. Vacant lots are especially a problem, he said. And, it seems like the city has an issue cutting its own grass, he added.

Oswego Speedway continues its summer stretch of action Saturday with Driver Autograph and Ovarian Cancer Awareness Night presented by JP Jewelers. Saturday’s schedule includes a 50-lap Novelis Supermodified main event as well as a 30-lap Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super feature. The Small Block Supers will revert back to running first on the schedule throughout this weekend’s racing.

The Oswego County Office for the Aging will co-sponsor a free training program Aug. 27 for professionals who want to learn more about combating elder abuse and the financial exploitation of older people. The training will take place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Oswego Elks Lodge, 132 W. Fifth St. Registration and lunch are free. Registration is required by Aug. 15.

These inquiries are well founded, as New Yorkers pay some of the highest residential energy costs in the nation. In fact, New York’s energy costs rank in the top 5 highest in the country. We pay on average 19.56 cents per kilowatt hour – significantly higher than what customers pay in other states.
The Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning is compiling a list of events and activities to include in its “Winter in Oswego County” brochure. The brochure will list winter and spring events in Oswego County that take place between Nov. 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015.
Dave Anthony, AC2CM, a member of the Oswego County Emergency Communicators/RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services), was honored with the 2014 Service Award for his dedication to the amateur radio group that helps government agencies with emergency communications needs.
In his court appearance Monday, Zachary Scott, pleaded guilty to one count of first degree burglary, conditioned upon a sentence of 19 and a half years in prison, along with 5 years parole in full satisfaction of the six murder, robbery and burglary charges against him.
In addition to the prison sentence, District Attorney Gregory Oakes said, “As a condition of the plea, he must testify truthfully and completely against his two codefendants, should those matters go to trial.”
