Health Officials Report More EEE and WNV Found In Oswego County

The Oswego County Health Department reported that the Eastern equine encephalitis virus has been found in ten new mosquito samples collected last week. Five of the samples were taken from West Monroe’s Toad Harbor Big Bay Swamp area, two near the village of Central Square, two from the town of New Haven, and one near NYS Route 104 in the town of Albion. The West Nile Virus has been found in one mosquito sample collected near the village of Central Square.

River’s End Bookstore Lends Support to Scrabble Fest

Bill Reilly, owner of river’s end bookstore in Oswego presented Meg Henderson, coordinator of Literacy Volunteers, with a two $50 gift certificates that will be used as part of the prizes for the eighth annual Diane Falise Memorial Scrabble Fest. To be held September 19 at the Oswego Elks Lodge, Scrabble Fest serves as a fundraiser for Literacy Volunteers.

Youth Bureau Supports Bookmobile’s Mission

The bookmobile is a summer program that provides free books to students in the Oswego City School District. The bookmobile encourages summer reading for at-risk children from pre-K to grade 12 by traveling to Oswego neighborhoods and giving away new or gently loved, popular books. In addition to receiving a book at their independent reading level, children also have a healthy snack and sometimes participate in literacy activities.

ALANA multicultural celebration to incorporate festivals from around world

SUNY Oswego’s 28th annual ALANA Student Leadership Conference multicultural celebration Sept. 18-24 will feature performances, presenters, a peace walk through the city of Oswego and a mini-carnival highlighting festivals from across the globe. A collaboration of student organizations under the banner African, Latino, Asian and Native American organization, the ALANA team this year chose “Carnivals and Festivals” as a theme to celebrate all cultures, whether minority or not.

Salmon River Fish Hatchery Hosts 19th Annual Open House

A full day of children’s activities, fishing seminars and outdoor programs are planned for this year’s open house at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Salmon River Fish Hatchery. This is the 19th annual open house at the hatchery, located at 2133 county Route 22 in Altmar. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine on September 27.
