From July 31 to August 11, the Oswego Public Library will be collecting books to put in the Little Libraries in the Oswego County area. The Little Library Houses are small, house-shaped boxes that can be found in most public parks in Oswego County. The public can take, read and share books as they wish.
With the warm weather here, local highway crews are out working on road repairs and construction projects. There are approximately 114,000 centerline miles of highway in the state and local governments are responsible for the maintenance of nearly 85% of them. Accordingly, they need assistance meeting the repair demands, especially considering the snowfalls in our area.
Recently, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded OCO Literacy Volunteers Program a $2,865 grant to support adult literacy. This local grant award is part of more than $7.5 million in grants awarded to nearly 900 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 44 states that Dollar General serves.
This summer, AmeriCorps partnered with APW schools and Cornell University Cooperative Extension to create a summer camp program at Camp Zerbe. Zerbe is located in the town of Williamstown. The camp program begins at 8 a.m. and goes until noon every Monday through Friday.
Hundreds of visitors toured replicas of Columbus’ flag ship, the Niña, and its sister ship, the Pinta, over the weekend at the West First Street pier near the H. Lee White Maritime Museum for Oswego’s Festival of Ships. Among the hundreds of visitors was Bill Foley of Oswego. He shares a few photos of his granddaughters’ visit.
The forecast called for great weather but Mother Nature had other ideas canceling the Fulton Speedway July 22 race night. The Speedway will be back in action on Saturday, July 29. The Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux topless Late Models that was scheduled for the 22nd will be on the race card plus the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, SUNY Canton Sportsman, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, JB Logging & Firewood 4-Cylinders and the Firehouse Subs Mod Lites.
Dorothy C. Hiler, 108, of Phoenix, NY, passed away on Friday July 21, 2017, at James Square Health & Rehabilitation Center, Syracuse, NY.
Twenty-one adult education students graduated from the Practical Nursing program at the Center for Career and Community Education recently, a community collaborative between Cayuga Community College and the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation.
