Gillibrand And Goldman Introduce Bill To Support People Living With Serious Mental Illness

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Congressman Dan Goldman (D-NY-10) are announcing the Strengthening Medicaid for Serious Mental Illness Act to provide desperately needed mental health support to the 14 million adults in the U.S. living with a serious mental illness (SMI), such as schizophrenia, bipolar illness, and major depressive disorder.

Gillibrand, Merkley, Torres Introduce Legislation To Give Asylum Seekers A Pathway To Safe And Legal Work

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-NY-15) announced the Assisting Seekers in Pursuit of Integration and Rapid Employment (ASPIRE) Act to give asylum seekers a pathway to safe and legal employment. Under current law, asylum seekers are forced to endure a 180-day waiting period before becoming eligible to obtain the permits needed to work legally in the United States. This delay severely hinders asylum seekers’ ability to provide for themselves and their loved ones and leaves many vulnerable to exploitative living and working conditions.

Overlooked Priorities Mark A Disappointing Session

As legislators, we are charged with developing legislation to improve public safety, the economy and the quality of life here in New York. Unfortunately, over the last six months, not much of the legislation that passed moved the needle on any of these fundamental considerations.
