3 Herons Honored by Liberty League, Including Fulton’s Kush

Three William Smith basketball players were honored by the Liberty League office today. Senior guard Mollie Danahy (Troy/Troy, N.Y.) and junior forward Kristen Kush (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) were named to the Team of the Week, while first-year guard Sasha Borenstein (Agoura Hills/Agoura Hills, Calif.) was named Rookie of the Week.

With a 72-64 win over Rensselaer and an 84-73 victory over Vassar the Herons earned a share of the regular season championship and a spot in the Liberty League Tournament this weekend.

Danahy averaged a team-high 22.0 points, a team-high 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.0 blocked shots in two games. She scored a game-high 25 points, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, made three steals, and handed out a pair of assists against Rensselaer. Danahy capped the week with 19 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high six assists against Vassar. For the week, she shot 46.7 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from 3-point range, and 86.7 percent from the free throw line.

A starter in all 25 games this season, Danahy is averaging 13.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.5 assists. She is second in the conference in steals, and seventh in scoring and field goal percentage (42.5).

Kush averaged 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds over the weekend. She scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds, and handed out a pair of assists against the Engineers. Kush contributed 22 points and a game-high nine rebounds against the Brewers. For the week, she shot 60 percent from the floor and 77.8 percent from the free throw line.

A starter in all 25 games this season, Kush is averaging 18.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.1 assists. She is second in the conference in scoring, third in field goal percentage (47.8) and fourth in rebounding.

Borenstein averaged 13.5 points and 2.0 assists, setting season-highs in each category along the way. She scored six points on a pair of 3-pointers and handed out a season-high four assists against Rensselaer. She posted a season-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting against Vassar. For the week, Borenstein shot 50 percent from the floor, including 57.1 percent from 3-point range.

Borenstein has appeared in all 25 games this season, averaging 6.4 points and 1.4 rebounds.

William Smith will return to action on Friday, Feb. 25 against Union in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament. The teams split the season series, with each earning a win on the other’s home court.
