The Oswego State Men’s Club Hockey Team split a pair of games this past weekend, the last games before the winter break.
On Saturday , the RIT Tigers traveled to the Campus Center to face the Lakers. The play was up and down the ice as 7 goals were scored in the first period alone. Oswego finally wore the Tigers down and the final score was 8-5 in favor of Oswego. The Laker goals were scored by Rudy Renick (2), Jordan Romano, D.J. Mazzoni , Brad Kervin, Chris Covel, Mike Steinke and Nick Atkins. Assists were credited to Chris Timmons (2), Chase Collins, Chris Flynn, Nick Phelps, James Hollowell and Justin Smith. Both Mike Reid and Anthony Sellitti played in net for a total of 24 saves. Coach Jay Peacock was pleased with the way the team played and noted that all 4 lines scored.
The following night Oswego hosted the Ithaca Bombers for an NECHL game. Oswego goals were scored by Chris Cavanaugh, Mike Steinke, D.J. Mazzoni, and Brad Kervin (2). Assisting were Conklin, Renick, Kervin, Collins, Romano and Rob Lippolis. Senior goaltender Anthony Sellitti had 37 saves during the regulation.
The scored was tied 5-5 after regulation play and went to a five minute sudden death overtime. With no goal scored, the rules dictated that there would be a shootout. Sophomore Chris Covel scored Oswego’s only goal and the Bombers won the shootout 2-1.
After the game, seniors Fabian Loeprick and Nick Atkins were honored as they will be graduating on December 18. Fabian is the co- president of the team and a business major. He will be returning to his native Germany after graduation.
Nick Atkins has been a member of the team for all four years and is from Auburn, NY. He Is a criminal justice major . He has been an important player on the team on both offense and defense and will be missed.
The Lakers are now off for the winter break and will be returning to campus a week early to prepare for the second semester. They will travel to Niagara on January 21. Their first home game of 2011 will be on January 28 when they will host Binghamton at 7:00. The team would also like to congratulate Don Tosti who was the winner of the custom made jersey.
The Lakers are a D1 ACHA team and a member of the NECHL. Local players include D.J. Mazzoni and Chris MacRae, members of the 2009 West Gensee State Champion Wildcats. For more information on the team, pictures, videos and schedule, visit the website at www.oswego.edu/icehockey.
