A mentoring program that unites Fulton’s high school students with those at the elementary level is off to a successful start this year.
As part of the initiative, two dozen G. Ray Bodley High School students get together with Fairgrieve Elementary School students every other Wednesday.
They play games, talk, and bond with one another.
“For the mentees, it’s really about having a positive role model to give them encouragement,” said GRB teacher Cathy Cronk. “The high school students voluntarily give up their time, and I know the elementary kids appreciate it.”
For the high school students involved in the program, the volunteerism is more rewarding than an after-school paid job.
According to GRB student and mentor Kaitlyn Kinney, the positive impact of the program is worth its weight in gold.
“It’s great that we can connect with these kids and really serve as role models,” she said. “We talk with them, offer them support, play games and have fun. This program has a positive effect on everyone involved.”
