Dear Readers,
We don’t like it very much, but we all know that even for the very best and most caring pet owners, sometimes stuff happens.
It could be illness, the unexpected loss of a job, even a natural disaster like a hurricane or a huge blizzard that destroys a home.
Then, in spite of our best efforts, we have to find a new home for a beloved pet.
At that point we discover that our options are limited.
Petfinder.com is a great online resource for shelters and rescue groups but individual people are not eligible to use it.
Craigslist is a nightmare for animals.
Even if there is space available, beloved pets who are used to a home will frequently languish in a shelter.
Foster programs like the one provided by the Oswego County Humane Society are great, but with limited spaces.
Don’t despair.
We just found out about Adopt-A-Pet.com, a nonprofit pet adoption website.
It has introduced a new, free service for owners who need to rehome their pets.
The owner creates an online pet profile that will be viewed by the public.
Adopt-A-Pet then guides the owner through a screening process that includes adoption applications, meet and greets, and an adoption contract.
An adoption fee is required and can be submitted online.
Such fees then go to the rescue or shelter of the owner’s choice.
This helps screen out unscrupulous people wanting to sell pets under the guise of rehoming and people trying to obtain pets for nefarious purposes like dog fighting.
The Oswego County Humane Society gets phone calls all the time from people in these circumstances and we help as much as possible, but this looks like a better and more direct alternative.
We hope that services such as Adopt-A-Pet’s new rehome program will help pet owners take steps before desperation sets in.
