Fulton District To Host 4th Annual Parent University

FULTON – The Fulton City School District will host its fourth annual Parent University from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 24 at G. Ray Bodley High School to help families make connections with school buildings, staff members and community agencies.

Geri Geitner, FCSD director of Student Support Services, said the district’s goal is to demonstrate that what children do during the school day prepares them for their futures and to underscore the importance of working toward future goals together.

The free event will kick off with registration, breakfast and opening remarks, followed by four sessions.

Parents alone may choose from the following sessions: Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten, including Special Education Transitions’ Maintaining Your Grounding: Mindfulness for Parents; Reading Aloud to Your Child: Have Fun and Start Now; Nurtured Heart (strategies for dealing with challenging behaviors) and Keeping Your Children Safe Online.

The following sessions are offered for adults and secondary students only:

OCC Clubhouse Overview (programs and services available to teens at the Oswego County Opportunities Clubhouse); Current Trends in Adolescent Substance Use; Work Study Learning Opportunities at G. Ray Bodley High School; Money Management for Teens and School Safety and Social-Emotional Wellness.

Family sessions are as follows: Make and Take Meal; Family Trivia Competition; Playing with Mindfulness and Robotics Test Drive.

Parent University will also feature student performances and a panel discussion on “Resilience,” which will be shown at two different times throughout the event.

The award-winning film tells the story of the biology of stress and the science of hope.

Geitner said if parents would like to attend sessions alone, supervised activities for children, ages four to 12, will be offered.

Everyone is also welcome to attend the community resource fair where more than two dozen service agencies will have representatives available to discuss services offered.

Collaborations with those strong community partners, Geitner said, help provide support and enrichment for students and their families.
