HANNIBAL – The sounds of spring filled the air, as fifth and sixth grade students at Dennis M. Kenney Middle School delighted a packed auditorium with a variety of choral and instrumental performances.

The concert, under the direction of Jeff Sawyer, included a variety of pieces from the school’s chorus and band, with each performance being introduced by student musicians.
Friends, staff and family members enjoyed an evening filled with well-known hits like “Wagon Wheel,” “Hakuna Matata,” and “Ghostbusters,” in addition to being taken on a journey across the globe with contemporary South African pieces like “Thula Klizeo,” “In Africa” and “Cango Caves.”

The evening came to a close with a wacky and fun piece called “Crazy for Cartoons.”
Tapping into the absurdity of early motion picture cartoons, the piece included instruments such as the bird water whistle, ratchet and suspended cymbal/whip, rarely used in modern arrangements.
