COVID-19 Statistics Update, December 22, 2020

OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been 46 additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and two more deaths since yesterday.

Today there are 641 active cases across the county.

“In addition to the ever-increasing number of people in Oswego County who are becoming infected with the coronavirus, we are sad to report today that we have lost two more of our residents to the disease,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “I would like to express our condolences to their families and friends.”

He reported that, in the week before Halloween, there were less than three dozen new positive cases announced.

“Since then, we have seen ever-increasing weekly cases,” Huang said. “From slightly over 100 cases a week after Halloween, to more than 250 a week in the middle of November, to around 400 cases every week in December. In the most recent weeks, death tolls have now come with these soaring cases. Please, protect yourselves, your loved ones and your neighbors. I urge you to avoid non-essential gatherings and keep holiday celebrations within your own household. Continue to social distance, wear a face mask and wash your hands frequently.”

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup briefed the public in his weekly video today. In the update, he discussed alarming COVID-19 trends and the vaccine.

Weatherup expressed his condolances to the family and friends of those who died this past week due to the virus.

“Unfortunately, with the virus spreading so rapidly and cases continuing to soar, we can expect to see more people hospitalized and more lives lost to the COVID virus,” Weatherup said. “Our public health staff is monitoring more than 1,300 people in mandatory isolation or quarantine and the department is keeping track of more than 600 people who have COVID-19. That is a huge load on our public health system.”

With that in mind, Weatherup asks residents to avoid non-essential social gatherings and to keep holiday celebrations within their own households.

As a positive step, Weatherup discussed the creation of a five-county regional COVID-19 partnership for distributing the vaccine. He said New York and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are prioritizing the order of vaccinations. Some health care workers, long-term care staff and residents, and emergency medical services will be vaccinated during the first phase.

As more doses become available, vaccination will expand to other groups in the general public. It will take several months to get the vaccine distributed to the point of herd immunity.

“It will take months to get all the adult populations covered. We will keep everyone informed when the vaccine becomes available to the general public,” Weatherup said.

Supervising Public Health Nurse Jodi Martin explained that the FDA and New York State have both reviewed the testing data and conclude that the vaccine is safe and effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Martin also discussed the importance of getting the flu shot, which she said is especially important this year because of the burden already placed on the health care system due to COVID-19. The county now has additional high dose flu vaccines available for those 65 and older. Flu shots are available by appointment only at the health department – 70 Bunner Street in Oswego. SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.
