Visit Fort Ontario for a Snowshoe Hike Feb. 7

OSWEGO – Fort Ontario State Historic Site offers a free snowshoe hike and program, “Unburying the Mysteries of the Post Cemetery,” on Friday, Feb. 7 from 1 to 2 p.m. The event takes place at the old stone fort, located on 1 E. Fourth St., Oswego.

A brief presentation featuring stories of the lives and deaths of those buried at the cemetery, will be followed by a snowshoe hike around the fort and up to the Post Cemetery on the bluff.

Attendees are asked to wear appropriate winter boots that can be strapped into snowshoes as well as warm layers, as it is windy on the bluff. Environmental educators will be on-site to answer questions and assist with snowshoes.

Snowshoes can be reserved by calling Green Lakes State Park at 315-400-3890 by noon on Thursday, Feb. 6. If there is no answer, callers can leave a message with their request.

If there is not enough snow for a snowshoe hike, the event will still be held as a regular hike.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which are visited by 78 million people annually.
