Fairgrieve After-School Club

An after-school club at Fairgrieve Elementary School is offering students in grades three through six an opportunity to take advantage of some extra help in preparation for the upcoming New York State Math and English Language Arts (ELA) tests. The club is an extension of what the students have been and are currently doing in their classrooms to prepare for the tests and include skill-focused lessons and practice activities to reinforce standards for learning at each grade level.

Nearly 80 students are participating in the club at Fairgrieve and meet twice a week after regular school hours. Each teacher involved in the after-school club works with a group of no more than ten students and focuses each session around a specific ELA or mathematical concept. For instance, a recent visit found fifth grade students working with Kerrie Phillips and reinforcing listening, reading, and vocabulary concepts with a game of antonym BINGO.

Excited about the opportunity to offer an after-school learning-focused club, Fairgrieve Principal Jean Ciesla said, “Each session and activity is reinforcing familiar concepts. Lessons are consistent what’s happening in our classrooms, what will be on the upcoming tests, and the club has been successful in helping to build our students’ confidence.”

The Fairgrieve after-school club will continue to meet until the first week in May when the standardized tests are slated to be administered.
