OSWEGO TOWN, NY – James H. Lee will be the topic of the first Oswego Town Historical Society meeting of 2014.
It will be held at the Oswego Town Hall, 2320 County Route 20, on March 19 at 6:30 p.m.
Lee, a resident of the town and North Sterling, was in the Battle of the Kearsage and Alabama 150 years ago this June.
He was a seaman on the USS Kearsage when she fought the CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France, in our Civil War.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery under fire.
After the war, Lee came to Oswego and married Julia Place of the town of Oswego.
He was active in community affairs and was a charter member of Hope Grange 115 in Southwest Oswego.
He is buried on the Place lot in Oswego Town Rural Cemetery.
The evening will share his life after the war.
The election of officers of the society will be held.
