FULTON – CNY Arts Center announces auditions for its summer family musical production of Bye Bye Birdie to be held at the Arts Center in Fulton located at 11 River Glen Drive.
Auditions will be held April 8 from 9:30 a.m. to noon and April 10 from 5 to 9 p.m.
The production will run August 4-13.
The iconic musical is based on a late 1950s event when Elvis Presley was drafted and gave one last kiss to an adoring fan before heading off to boot camp.
The resulting chaos has remained a perennial favorite onstage, screen and television with the latest remake planned for a live television broadcast starring Jennifer Lopez this holiday season.
A mainstay of many high school drama clubs, the original movie starred Ann Margaret and Dick Van Dyke.
The large cast requires teens and adults and offers several great songs with dance routines for the teen cast.
“This will be the biggest production we’ve done so far with roles for lots of teens through adults, great dancing from the period, well-known songs, huge set changes, and period costumes for all,” said Nancy Fox, director. “We’ve scheduled auditions early so folks can make summer plans now to join us for our family musical. The original Broadway production had a cast of 47 performers, including chorus. We are hoping for a substantial turnout.”
“It’s also one of the most popular of the classic musicals and people seem to have fond memories and favorite characters. We’re putting a large production team together to build and costume the show, along with a strong artistic team for all the singing and dancing. We’re already gathering old-style rotary phone hand-sets for the classic Telephone Hour Song. If you have one you’d like to donate, please call,” she continued.
Well-known area music director Dan Williams will be teaching vocals and conducting the pit musicians while newcomer Kara Palmer will create choreography for the fast-paced dance numbers.
Palmer teaches in the Fulton School District as well as a dance teacher in a Baldwinsville dance studio.
Auditioners will need to prepare a Broadway song to sing and plan to read from the script.
Accompaniment will be provided.
The Arts Center is located on the Cayuga College Fulton Campus.
