SUNY Oswego meteorology faculty member Scott Steiger and students next winter will study lake-effect snow very up close and personal thanks to $320,000 in grant funds from the National Science Foundation and an armada of instrument-loaded vehicles, including an airplane to fly into the teeth of the storms.
Rep. Dan Maffei announced today (April 10) that the Palermo Volunteer Fire Department will receive a $90,801 grant in Round 21 of the FY2012 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program which is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The Literacy Coalition of Oswego County’s annual Children’s Book Drive received some welcome support recently when the Wal-Mart Super Center, Route 3 in Granby, announced that it would be hosting a book drive on April 27. Wal-Mart employees will be accepting donations of new and gently used books with titles of interest to toddlers through teens.
Assemblyman Will Barclay will host an American Red Cross blood drive on May 3 at the Elks Lodge in Oswego. “The Red Cross does so much good in providing blood for emergency rooms and hospitals throughout our region, which saves lives every day. I’m happy to dedicate a day to help the local chapter find more donors,” said Barclay.
State Senator Patty Ritchie will honor 16 Central and Northern New York women who were nominated for the New York State Senate’s “Women of Distinction” program at a special event, taking place in Watertown on Thursday at the Flower Memorial Library at 6 p.m.
Softball Registrations for the 2013 Summer Season are now being accepted at the City Clerk’s office in the Municipal Building, Fulton. Rosters, schedules and rules are also available at this location. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Chiropractors throughout Oswego County will host a special Patient Appreciation Day in support of the United Way. On May 4 participating chiropractors will offer chiropractic treatments for current and former patients, as well as examinations for new patients in exchange for a $20 donation to the United Way of Greater Oswego County.
The Public Policy and Education Fund is offering Green Jobs program to
help Oswego residents save money on the energy bill.
Youth Court is designed to give middle school and high school students first-hand experience in the judicial process, and serves youth who commit crimes which are not typically addressed in Family Court. Youth Court members hear cases involving juvenile offenders and sentence them to a fair punishment.
Together with the students being honored, an audience of family, friends and campus colleagues of the honorees will witness the procession of faculty presenters in academic regalia, applaud students receiving awards, and hear from 1981 communication studies graduate Rosemary Cardamone Crane.
