Groh Dredging and Marine’s dredger moored just off the Lake Neatahwanta shoreline of Stevenson Beach on Tuesday as the company readied its equipment to begin pumping.

As the seasonal clock ticks off the last days of summer, Phoenix’s Henley Park heated up one more time Monday evening with the village’s 2014 Music in the Park Concert Series, this week featuring the acoustic rock group Hendry.

The state’s Broadway Bridge project over the Oswego River in the city of Fulton has entered the final phase of reconstruction and all lanes and sidewalks are slated to reopen by Sept. 30 according to the Department of Transportation.

When a five-year-old Fulton boy wanted to help the library he loves, his budding entrepreneurial spirit inspired him to do what kids can do when they want to fund a project – he offered to open a lemonade stand. Declan Nickerson approached Fulton Public Library children’s coordinator Janelle Wallace with his idea. “I was touched when Declan came to me with the idea of a lemonade stand and his desire to give the money to the library,” Wallace said.

The village of Phoenix community turned out in full force on Saturday for a morning of basketball fun to support its police department’s senior citizen program CHOOSE. Organizer Justus Stahrr said, “The CHOOSE program is a great example of community policing. It’s something that Chief Nerber desires to bring back to this community.”

The bid for $118,965.20 to begin dredging Lake Neatahwanta was awarded to an Illinois firm on Tuesday and the contract assures removal of the first 10,000 cubic yards of silt by mid-September. “Once the initial 10,000 cubic yards is dredged, any new money raised could be spent on a $12.89 per-cubic-yard basis for as long as (the contractor) is available or until the end of the season,” FCRC Director Joe Fiumara said.

Some east side residents were surprised Tuesday evening to find a black bear wandering through their city neighborhood. Fulton Police responded to the call in the 700 block of Cayuga Street and called the state Department of Environmental Conservation for advice on how best to deal with the bear.
