Fulton Native’s Murderer Executed In Atlanta

Justice has been served for a former Fulton family – after a 19-year wait. Convicted cop killer Gregory Lawler was executed this evening in Atlanta. The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles denied his request for clemency and he was put to death late Wednesday night. Lawler, 63, was convicted for the Oct. 12, 1997, murder of Atlanta police officer John “Rick” Sowa – a native of Fulton, NY. “I’m glad it’s over. For me, 19 years of waiting is over,” Sowa’s mother, Christine Carlson Roth, told Oswego County Today.

Upstate Energy Jobs Coalition Comments On Challenge To CES

“Today’s challenge to the Clean Energy Standard does not take away from the thousands of people across the State of New York who support the measure, and support nuclear energy for the carbon-free energy it produces,” said Gary Toth, vice chair of the County of Oswego Industrial Development Agency and UEJ member: “This lawsuit, filed by gas, oil and coal generators, is blatantly putting specific business interests ahead of what is best for New York.”

IBEW, Building Trades Respond To Lawsuit Against CES

Today (Oct. 19), the IBEW Utility Labor Council of New York, along with the Central and Northern New York Building and Construction Trades Council and the Rochester Building and Construction Trades Council, reiterated its strong support for New York’s Clean Energy Standard (CES) and voiced their disappointment at the lawsuit filed by gas, oil and coal generators seeking to halt the implementation of the CES.

Dr. Liepke Named NY Army National Guard State Surgeon

Dr. Matthew Liepke, an Oswego resident and a Lieutenant Colonel in the New York Army National Guard, has been named New York Army National Guard State Surgeon. In that role Liepke will be responsible for overseeing medical issues and medical training for the members of the 10,300 Soldier New York Army National Guard.

Oswego Councilors To Tweak Taxi Ordinance Plan

A proposal to amend the city’s taxicab ordinance stalled at the committee level again Monday night. Councilor John Gosek requested discussion regarding changes to the Taxicab Ordinance. Following a marathon debate, no action was taken on the Fifth Ward Councilor’s proposed changes. One tentative amendment that raised a red flag was that applicants “shall be of good moral character.”

Freshman Stabbed On Campus at SUNY Oswego

Authorities are searching for four suspects in connection with the stabbing of an 18-year-old freshman earlier this morning on the SUNY Oswego campus. According to the college, the teen was assaulted and stabbed four times in the shoulder outside of the Shineman Center. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where he is expected to recover.
