A request to set a public hearing regarding proposed Local Law No. 2 of 2014 turned into nearly an hour-long discussion of the city’s budget process and transparency in government at Monday night’s the Planning and Development Committee meeting. Gay Williams, city attorney, requested authorization to schedule a public hearing for July 28 for 7:10 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. If the budget has a tax rate increase of 5 percent or more than the previous year’s tax rate, then the budget shall go to a public referendum in that year’s November election,

The action is being considered following a large party at the beach last year, which trashed the area. On July 26 (the night of the fireworks), at 7 p.m., the Police Department will allow access only for viewing of the fireworks, and will close at the conclusion of the fireworks until 7 a.m. July 28.

UPDATE – The victim has been identified as a 37-year-old Pulaski man. His son is said to be unhurt. Authorities say the man was attempting to save a boy who had fallen into the river. The investigation is continuing.

The Oswego Common Council voted 4-0-3 Tuesday night to approve the purchace of a portable milling machine for the Department of Public Works, as well as the reimbursement of the purchase through CHIPS funding from the state.
