Water Chestnut Pulls Are ‘Making A Difference’

Peter Bock with a full load of water chestnuts in the Factory Island channel.Eleven volunteers worked the Oswego River, along the west and south sides of Battle Island, the west shore of the mainland and the channel between Factory Island and Battle Island Golf Course. A noticeable decrease in the chestnut quantities was observed along the west shore of Battle Island after five years of pulling the chestnuts in that area.

State Police Investigate Animal Complaint in Sandy Creek

The horses were evaluated by the Oswego County Humane Society and a veterinarian from North Country Veterinary and found to be underweight. However, there were no signs of neglect. The homeowner, in conjunction with county officials, will work to ensure the horses are properly fed and nourished to attain the appropriate weight, according to the State Police.

Project Aims To Put Unproductive Farmland Back To Use

Tim Volk, SUNY-ESF senior research scientist, presents the senator with some of the willow shoots that will be planted.On Thursday (July 5), Senator Kirsten Gillibrand met with central and northern New York farmers interested in participating in growing willow shrubs for renewable energy fuel. Last month, she helped secure $4.3 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the creation of a new Biomass Crop Assistance Program project in New York.
