State Decision On Ballast Water Regulations Could Sink Oswego Port
The port could be forced to close if New York moves forward to enforce unworkable rules governing the treatment of ballast water carried by commercial vessels on the St. Lawrence Seaway. The proposal would require meeting strict guidelines; however, no technology exists anywhere in the world to achieve this goal, opponents point out.
The tentative $189,363,300 spending plan shows a slight dip in the tax rate, down from this year’s $7.16 per $1,000 assessed to $7.07. Legislators will now review the plan and possibly make recommendations. A public hearing will be held before the Dec. 16 legislature meeting.
