Teachers: Armed Educators Not The Answer To School Violence

In the wake of yet another deadly shooting spree at a school, president Trump has suggested arming teachers would help put an end to the carnage. The notion of arming teachers should only be considered only after all other options have been exhausted, an area teacher told OCT, and others agree. The sad truth is that very few options have been looked at or attempted in large part because of the NRA’s financial grip on the legislative branch, one area teacher said.

County Slates Pair Of Public Hearings

One would amend Local Law #1 of 2015 regarding extending the Residential Building Capital Improvement Exemption pursuant to Real Property Tax Law 421-f. The amendment would extend the expiration date to March 1, 2028. Also on March 15, the county will hold a public hearing regarding proposed Local Law #2 of 2018. It would update the Cold War Veterans’ Property Tax Exemption Act the county adopted in 2009.

At its meeting Tuesday night, the Administrative Services Committee gave a favorable recommendation to a request to help those touched by Autism Spectrum Disorder. Justin Rudgick, community development director, received a request from Julie Chetney on behalf of the Oswego County Autism Task Force to organize the Out Run Autism 5K event to be held on April 7.

Mayor Billy Barlow’s proposed local law to aggressively increase the enforcement, fines and penalties for property maintenance issues such as tall grass, un-shoveled sidewalks, exposed garbage and other violations took a big step toward becoming a reality Tuesday night. The legislation would target property maintenance issues such as tall grass, un-shoveled sidewalks, exposed garbage and the tidiness of property visible from city streets.

Port City To Follow County’s Support Of Elevating Fort’s Status

At its February meeting, the Oswego County Legislature unanimously approved a bipartisan resolution, offered by Tom Drumm (D) and Tim Stahl (R), which supports efforts to elevate the fort complex to national park status. The clerk was authorized to submit a certified copy of the entire resolution to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Sen. Charles Schumer, Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, Congressman John Katko, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, Sen. Patty Ritchie, Assemblyman Will Barclay, and Assemblyman Robert Oakes. The city plans to lend its support as well on Tuesday night.

Mayor Barlow proposes stricter property maintenance rules in Oswego

Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (Feb. 15) a proposed local law he will bring to the Oswego Common Council for consideration. He proposes to aggressively increase the enforcement, fines and penalties for property maintenance issues such as tall grass, un-shoveled sidewalks, exposed garbage and the tidiness of property visible from city streets. He will also request funding for an additional code enforcer position in the code enforcement department.
