Ten teams studied 10 books at Michael A. Maroun Elementary in hopes of being names the school’s Battle of the Books champion. Ultimately, “The Lighting Lazers” members coached by Rebecca Coffin, were victorious after they answered 14 of the 16 questions correctly and earned 112 points.
At last count, the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Elementary School Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser has raised more than $7,690 with additional donations still coming in.
It took four tie-breaker questions to ultimately determine team Rainbow Readers as the Fulton City School District fifth and sixth grade Battle of the Books champion. The Volney Elementary students edged out Fairgrieve Elementary’s “Wonder Girls” team in the friendly competition.
The Central Square Robotics Club’s VEX team, the Robo Eagles, had a huge day at the recent New York State Championships, taking home several top awards and qualifying for the VEX World Championships in Lousiville, Kentucky.

Tom Briggs, director of the recent Quirk’s Players’ musical, “Annie,” said the decades-old tradition of showcasing select scenes from their productions has been successful twofold. It prepares the actors, actresses and crew for their public performances and opens up the world of theater to several young children.
One of Central NY’s most active Christian Rock bands is gearing up for a new season of its popular passion concert “Tenebrae.” Telling of the battle between light and darkness, during Christ’s arrival in Jerusalem first appeared at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fulton in 2013.
Several Mexico Middle School students took home top honors for the local portion of the annual Patriot’s Pen national writing contest. Collin Hatch took home a first place finish at the local level, while Matthew Purchas came in second, Matthew Morrel came in third and Kaylee Drake came in fourth.
Three Central Square alumni were recently inducted into the school district’s wall of distinction, an honor bestowed to individuals whose hard work, dedication and volunteerism have benefited the school and community. The fourth annual wall of distinction ceremony recognized Dean Burdick, Maryellen Commisso and Kenneth Sherman.
Fairgrieve Elementary was the lucky local school to benefit from TCC Verizon’s Culture of Good initiative.
Store manager David Janes and representative John Budd recently visited the school to deliver several boxes full of school supplies for Fairgrieve classrooms.
