On October 15, a dream will come true for one Fulton resident. Ever since Tom Moore Jr. was a teenager, he dreamed of owning his own martial arts school. With the grand opening of Synergistic Martial Arts and Fitness at 554 S. First St., he will have seen that dream through to completion.

From the classroom to the outdoors, Fairley Elementary School fourth graders put their academic knowledge to the test during a recent fun field trip to Camp Hollis in Oswego Town.

This year’s “Screamwood Forest” will be open with a few new exciting scenes the two weekends before Halloween: Oct. 21, 22, 28 and 29. The trail will feature ‘friendly frights’ without live-action characters from 6 to 8 p.m. along with the opportunity for young children to “trick or treat” along the way. All proceeds will benefit the Phoenix Chorus and Drama Boosters and go towards continued support for theater and music programs.

The night provided an opportunity for students and their parents to meet Marshall and hear about the instrumental music program at the school. Students can opt to “borrow” an instrument from the district, rent or buy one from an area dealer.

The Riverview Room at St. Luke Health Services in Oswego was the scene for a special gathering by friends and family, who joined to pay tribute to local musician and educator Hugh Burritt.

The students were eager to show their family members around the school and took them on their schedule to meet with teachers and others in the building.

The students were given instructions on safe and proper evacuation procedures and then were given an opportunity to practice what they learned using the emergency exit at the rear of their buses.

Students in the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown School District are encouraged to apply for the VFW’s Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay competitions sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and VFW Auxiliary.

Research, reading, problem solving, critical thinking and an understanding of the elements of flight and aerodynamics were all utilized when Chad Bigelow, technology integration specialist at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Elementary School visited with fifth graders in Stephanie Stanton’s class for a hands-on lesson on paper airplanes.
