Fourth Graders At Lura M. Sharp Explore Native American Culture

The auditorium at Lura M. Sharp Elementary School recently transformed into a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) village as fourth graders got a firsthand glimpse into the lives of Native Americans. For the students, who had just completed a unit on Native American studies, the Jan. 15 performance of “There Once was a Longhouse” reinforced the lessons they had learned in the classroom.

Injured Solider To Receive New Home From Homes For Our Troops

In 2011, United States Army SFC Jeffery Hackett faced a tough reality after losing his leg when he triggered a wire-tripped improvised explosive device while serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan. After the incident, Hackett was airlifted from the battlefield to Lanstuhl, Germany, and was eventually brought stateside to reunite with his wife, Bobby Jo, and his three daughters. For his service, Hackett and his family will be presented with a new home in the town of Mexico.

Exit, Stage Right: Lura Sharp Students Learn To Become Actors

Students at Lura Sharp Elementary School recently discovered what it takes to become an actor during a visit from the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. Several performers from MGR stopped by to provide workshops and study guide materials tailored to each grade level. More than just an acting lesson, the workshops are also designed to help teachers and students meet the New York State Learning Standards.
