Even with snowflakes falling and winter winds gusting, more than 150 community members braved the elements to participate in a Jingle Bell run recently held at Granby Elementary School. Organized by the school’s running club, the event was a three mile run or walk designed for staff, students or parents.
Fairgrieve Elementary School’s virtue of the month recipients were named by Principal Jean Ciesla at a special recognition ceremony at the school. Parents and family members were on hand when the students were announced for their outstanding demonstration of the December character trait of empathy.
The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts started December 12 and will end on December 31 – January 1. New York State Police, county sheriff and municipal law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in force. Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce drunken driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.
Students performed traditional favorites including White Christmas and Silent Night, along with a wonderful rendition of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy for the residents and family members in attendance.
This Sunday is the Lake City Lodge No. 127 and Lake City Victoria Order of the Eastern Star No. 205 All You Can Eat Christmas Breakfast Buffet Benefit with Santa and raffle to benefit the Oswego Community Youth Orchestra.
The joint concert, which was well attended by family members and friends of the performers, featured the school’s percussion ensemble, symphonic band, concert chorus and wind ensemble, as well as chamber sings and combined choirs.
The Phoenix Community Band recently performed its annual Christmas concert before a packed crowd at John C. Birdlebough High School. Led by Director David Frateschi, a Phoenix Central School District music teacher, the band performed several festive songs to the pleasure of many Phoenix community members.
Residents at Bishop’s Commons welcomed their neighbors, Riley Elementary School fourth graders from Judy Mooney’s class, for a holiday-related construction project. Gingerbread squares, frosting and assorted candies for decoration all came together in a creative way, with each team of students and residents making unique and tasty gingerbread houses which the students got to keep when completed!
The selection process began back in October when students with a weighted average of at least a 90% from their freshmen and sophomore years were invited to complete an application for induction into the honor society. After applications were received, a faculty committee was formed to review the applications and assess the student’s demonstration service, character, citizenship and leadership.
Holiday music echoed throughout the Sandy Creek Elementary School wing recently as pre-kindergarten students treated family members to two separate concerts. Students in both the morning and afternoon pre-k programs belted out classic tunes while dancing and moving along to the beat of the music.
