As each deceased resident’s name was read, family or St. Luke staff placed a flower in remembrance of the resident on a memorial wreath. Words of remembrance from family, songs, prayers and even some laughter as joyful memories of residents’ lives were recounted, were all a part of the ceremony.
Thanksgiving is the time of the year the Oswego Public Library reflects on the generosity of those in our community who have helped us provide services to our patrons. This year, the Children’s Room is thankful for receiving a substantial grant from the Oswego County Youth Bureau to help with the costs of the Summer Reading Program.
The Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church recently joined in with other churches to help with the mission of Operation Christmas Child. The event is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to needy children around the world.
“Holiday Magic” comes to Oswego High School, 2 Buccaneer Boulevard, when vocalist Danan Tsan and conductor Sean O’Loughlin join Symphoria December 14 at 3 p.m. Holiday favorites from Irving Berlin, Leroy Anderson, and Tchaikovsky, along with newer pieces including those from Disney’s “Frozen,” plus a sing-along finale, will be sure to entertain all ages!
The Oswego Festival Chorus, conducted by Dr. Mihoko Tsutsumi, will present its fall concert on December 2 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 103 W. Seventh St. Admission to the concert is free.
Granby Elementary teacher Justin Johnson has taken his teaching to the next level by writing his own books for his students to read. “My career started with a group of second graders in Fulton,” said Johnson. “As the year came to a close I thought, Hey, I want to write a story for these guys, so I went home and began working very hard on my first book.”
The dynasty continues for the Phoenix Central School District’s cheerleading team, which took home its 13th consecutive Section III Class B title during a recent competition. Surrounded by parents, school officials and friends, the Firebirds scored a 97.3 during its championship-winning routine held at Oriskany High School.
Cayla Weaver, G. Ray Bodley sophomore, wanted to do something to give back to America’s troops, and with the help of the school’s HOPE Club (Helping Other People Everywhere), one girl’s heart became a collaborative vision.
Students, faculty and staff at Fairley Elementary School showed their appreciation for armed servicemen and women during a recent assembly. The patriotic event included a color guard, several local veterans (who were listed and recognized), a tribute to a former teacher and a song performed by the students.
Members of Peaceful Schools, a Syracuse-based organization specializing in social-emotional education and conflict resolutions, paid a visit to the school and performed the play “Have You Filled Your Bucket Today.”
