When the Hannibal Central School District Board of Education approved the budget for the 2014-2015 school year, board members made it clear that professional development opportunities were a priority. Judging by recently released state assessments, that investment has already paid off.

Families flocked to Fairley Elementary School for an open house recently to learn about the district’s expectations and to meet the teachers and staff members who will help guide each student toward success. The open house provided an opportunity for parents to tour the school with their child and to check out the class projects already under way. In addition to touring individual classrooms, families lined the hallways to view some of the student artwork and writing samples on display.

On Thursday, October 2, Weaver’s Mercantile & Co. Flea Market, located at 2403A State Route 49 in West Monroe, will open its doors to the public. The store will have more than 20 vendors with an array of items

Principal Gregory Molloy, who greeted students and parents as they entered the building, said the event allows parents to see what their students will be learning and get a feel for what their children experience every day. “It’s a great opportunity to start building an educational partnership between the school and parents,” he said.

There will be a free concert Saturday at 7 p.m. at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church featuring Don Shortslef a well-known Christian recording artist from this local area. A freewill offering will be taken.
