Granby Elementary School in the Fulton City School District recently held a school-wide assembly to acknowledge students who have displayed good attendance, behavior and progress throughout the school year.

Students at Granby Elementary School were recently honored for displaying good attendance, behavior and progress. Students Mackenzie Coant and Aloysius Konys-Woodard were named the recipients of the It’s Cool 2B in School award.

During the assembly, Principal Heather Perry recognized students for achieving academic success or showcasing positive behavior traits.

Students who had not received any behavioral referrals and went above and beyond to meet the district’s expectations were honored, including Julie Wood’s entire fourth grade class.

Mrs. Wood’s class received the first-ever Referral Free award, meaning every student in the class demonstrated respectful, responsible and safe behavior throughout the entire second quarter of the school year.

Student Josephine Valenzuela was awarded a scooter after being drawn from a pool of students who participated in the Reach for the Stars Challenge, which aims to encourage students to read.

The top readers during the challenge were students Franky Brockway, Kieran O’hanlon, Lydia Mirabito, Riley Thompson and Sutter Lewin.

Students in Julie Wood’s fourth grade class were presented with Granby Elementary’s first-ever Referral Free award. The award is presented to a class that demonstrated respectful, responsible and safe behavior throughout an entire quarter of the school year.

“As part of the district-wide It’s Cool 2B in School initiative, we promote every student being in school at least 90 percent of the time,” said Perry. “Every student in Mrs. Mooney’s class reached the goal.”

Throughout the assembly, students roared in approval as they watched their classmates accept a given award.

However, the greatest applause of all came after each award had been handed out.

Perry challenged the school to collectively read for 1 million minutes by the end of the school year, which would translate to each student reading approximately 20 minutes per night.

If the school can accomplish the feat by the end of the year, Perry said she would dye her hair pink, much to the excitement of the students.
