New York State Police investigate domestic shooting in the town of Mexico

OSWEGO COUNTY – On August 20, 2026, at approximately 6:38 p.m., State Police responded to 2352 U.S. Route 11 in the town of Mexico for a report of a domestic.

The preliminary investigation determined that the victim responded to the residence to speak with a family member, Daniel S. Smith, age 33, of Parish, NY.

During the encounter, Smith requested that the victim leave the property. The victim and Smith then became involved in a physical altercation.

During the dispute, Jerry B. White, age 55, of Parish, NY, who resides at a neighboring property, discharged a single round from a 20-gauge shotgun into the air in an apparent attempt to stop the altercation.

The investigation further determined that Smith then retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and discharged one round, striking the victim in the upper leg. A witness to the incident contacted 911.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Upstate University Hospital, where he remains in stable condition with a non-life-threatening injury.

Smith was taken into custody at the scene.

Daniel S. Smith was charged with:

  • Assault in the Second Degree (Class D felony)
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Class C felony)
  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Class A misdemeanor)

A 14-year-old child was present during the incident, which resulted in the charge of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Smith was transported to the Oswego County Correctional Facility pending arraignment.

A Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order (TERPO) investigation was also initiated in connection with the incident.

As a result of the investigation, Jerry B. White was charged with:

  • Four counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (Class D felony)
  • One count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (Class D felony)
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree (Class A misdemeanor)

White was also transported to the Oswego County Correctional Facility pending arraignment.

The investigation remains ongoing.
